Every designer dreams of starting with a blank slate – at least that’s what you’d think. But when it came to the neat white box three bedroom situated in Herzog & de Meuron’s swanky new Beirut high-rise, the building’s bare nature proved tricky. “The apartment had white walls and floors, and that’s it,” David Raffoul, one half of the AD100 design firm David/Nicolas, says of fashioning its interiors for his Lebanese Egyptian husband-and-wife clients. “So we had this challenge of building an identity.”
That began with the first item chosen for the apartment: a massive living room Ziegler rug, sourced directly from an antique shop in Beirut. It’s hard to imagine that this bright Beirut apartment was once a dark and moody space with stone cladding on the walls and dark wood parquet flooring... it was a typical bachelor pad. But when the bachelor started a family, the space needed a radical rethink. Step forward interior designer Marc Dibeh, whose sensitive touch aligned with the family’s need for a cheerier, more functional home. His initial brief was just to lighten things up, but the project grew when he chanced upon a colourful rug by Patricia Urquiola that set the creative trajectory of this home in Beirut.

Originally a furniture consultant, Ghandour pivoted to interior design during the 2020 lockdowns when she finally had the time to consider what she really wanted to do and more importantly, what brought her real joy. Her home in the sky, tucked away in the bustling Gemmayzeh area of Beirut thats boasts a mix of heritage and mid-century buildings, is in many ways, a crystallisation of her vision, where art and design meet to create tranquil, yet characterful havens. The owners of this dramatic duplex in Beirut, which runs across the top two floors of a residential high-rise in the resurgent Lebanese capital's Achrafieh district, previously lived in a much smaller apartment nearby.
When the couple acquired the 950m-square apartment, they inherited two empty floor plates, which offered a whole host of possibilities. In order to configure them, they called upon brother-and-sister duo Georges Maria and Michèle Chaya, founders of local architecture firm Mariagroup, and embarked upon a design process that lasted three years.
