An unexpected boutique hotel in Barcelona has broken all the style rules to emerge as one of the chicest places to stay at in Spain's Catalonian capital. Located in the city's central Eixample neighbourhood, on a street filled with ‘Modernista’-style architecture (think stucco, stained glass and forged iron), the Almanac Barcelona makes its presence felt with its protruding, playful capsule-like windows that look like buttons on a 90s game.
What were once Juliet balconies have been cleverly converted into custom reading nooks placed in the floating bay ‘windows’ of the hotel suites, where guests can comfortably recline while gazing out towards the busy, tree-lined Gran Via.

This glamorous boutique hotel in Barcelona was conceived as a single property by Jaime Beriestein and his team by merging two buildings from different eras. It now brandishes a wealth of textures and materials within its interior decorated in muted colours with beige and gold accents; in anyone else's hands this concept could have turned out quite du jour, but here it creates a cocoon of chic, timeless elegance. Oak and walnut wood also take centrestage, adding a sense of natural warmth to the contemporary building.
Antique mirrors enlarge the property inside, complemented by an extensive use of Ibiza marble, which also makes its way into the spacious bathroom suites with double vanities and a powerful rain shower. In the lobby, large windows bring the city inside; its decor, a discreet nod to Barcelona and its architectural details.

When you’re not busy lounging on the soft-feather king-size bed, the Virens restaurant by Michelin-star chef Rodrigo la Calle is a gastronomic treat of green cooking, inspired by the small Spanish town of Jaen, where he grew up, surrounded by nature and vegetable gardens. The organic and imaginative (mostly vegetal) dishes are served in a high-ceilinged blue-hued dining room, with towering brass lamps.
