The MENA region is filled with an incredible breadth of creative thought and innovation, blending traditional Arab design sensibilities with modern philosophies and international influences. As such, there’s no shortage of design fairs and events that showcase this amazing inventive spirit. And much as international design shows remain vital to the design community, these Middle East showcases are blazing a bold new trail.
Dubai Design Week is the MENA region’s most expansive design festival, reflecting the city-state’s preeminent position as the creative capital of the Middle East. Staged annually every November, in partnership with Dubai Design District (d3), the show’s varied programme includes exhibitions, activations and panel discussion that span multiple disciplines. Accessibility and interactivity are also a huge part of Dubai Design Week. Each year’s showcase brings with it a wide range of public installations to excite and inspire visitors, each one illuminating a unique design solution that pushes the bounds of convention. Although still in open calls for their impending ninth edition, Dubai Design Week 2023 promises to explore the intersection between design and innovation with sustainable, socially responsible commissions featuring urban furniture concepts and outdoor installations. Dubai Design Week returns 7-12 November 2023.
As the Middle East's premier fair for high-quality, contemporary interiors, Downtown Design is a must-see for creatives and connoisseurs alike. Running in tandem with Dubai Design Week, it brings together a dynamic group of top-tier professionals, brands and manufacturers to discover their latest collections and innovations from both regional and international designers. Accompanied by a diverse array of talks, curated showcases, competitions and workshops, it takes its visitors to the cutting edge of what the region has to offer. The 2023 edition is already shaping up to be one of its best, with many exciting brands, including Cassina, Lasvit, B&B Italia and FLOS. After a ten year absence, Kartell will return with a brand-new, standalone showcase. Downtown Design 2023 will take place 8-11 November in Dubai.
Based in the heart of the Lebanese capital, We Design Beirut is a new multidisciplinary celebration of design and creativity that aims to promote both established and emerging the creative talents from the country. Launching this October, its inaugural theme embodies concepts of empowerment, perseverance and sustainability, lensed through an exceptional roster of designer showcases, discussions and workshops. From architecture and interior design to product design and functional art, this four-day event stands to enrich the current design ecosystem in Lebanon, as well as reactivating unused historic locations in Beirut. These include iconic landmarks like The Egg, Villa Mokbel and The Royal Cinema, all of which will play host a raft of public events. Plus, there will be curated tours of Tripoli’s UNESCO-listed Oscar Niemeyer International Fair complex and select designers will open up their personal spaces to visitors. The first edition of We Design Beirut will run from October 27-30, 2023.
Presented by the Architecture and Design Commission of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Design Festival was launched in January 2022, the scope of the event has only continued to expand, bringing together an international creative community, along with industry experts and thought leaders, to connect and reimagine the future together. The programme includes public installations, both physical and digital, along with industry-specific masterclasses and a special section dedicated to small businesses, making the event accessible to all. The speed of Saudi Design Festival's evolution reflects KSA’s dedication to continue growing their local design ecosystem, solidifying Riyadh’s rapidly developing capacity as a global centre for innovation. Under the guidance of creative cultural consultancy &bouqu, the sky’s the limit for their upcoming second edition. Saudi Design Festival will return in January, 2024, with dates still to be confirmed.
The Design Show positions itself as Egypt’s first and foremost dedicated architecture, interior and product design exhibition, one of the largest in the MENA region. Originally created to enrich the Egyptian design sector by connecting brands with regional designers, the event has transitioned into a multidisciplinary design destination that brings together the best of the local scene to facilitate new projects in the region. Now planning its ninth edition, The Design Show will take visitors outside the confines of a typical trade fair, allowing members of the public to connect with experts and educate themselves about the latest trends and innovations in these constantly evolving creative fields. Those visiting The Design Show in 2024 can expect everything from outdoor landscaping ideas, to interior solutions and contemporary furniture, by some of the country's top designers and brands. The next edition of The Design show will take place at the Cairo International Convention Centre, May 23-25, 2024.
