Despite its complex appearance, the National Museum of Qatar by Jean Nouvel emphasises the simplicity and clean lines characteristic of modernist architecture, seen in the integration of its disk-shaped exterior with the museum’s minimalistic interior. Resembling a desert rose, the Doha building departs from traditional forms with its abstract and organic structure, prioritising form and function to create a symbolically significant and aesthetically pleasing design. A minimalist design, marked by clean lines underscores its overall sleek form, which is enhanced by the extensive use of glass and steel. Large windows and strategically placed skylights allow natural light to permeate the interior, creating a bright, welcoming environment that reduces the need for artificial lighting and fosters a connection with the surrounding landscape. The design process was profoundly shaped by the library’s role as a bridge between tradition and modernity. A playful tribute to Qatar’s heritage, the library’s central atrium features a spacious, open area reminiscent of traditional Arabian courtyards, but reimagined as a vibrant social hub.

This structure is crafted as a modular kit, where each component is purposefully designed and makes up a catalogue of 150 types, incorporating 12,800 elements interlocked by metal connectors. The use of curved pillars and beams, along with steel cables, minimises material usage while maintaining structural integrity, resulting in a three-story base topped with striking roofs, reminiscent of a Bedouin tent, blending historical references with contemporary aesthetics.
Completed in 2014, the Sharjah Art Foundation's design is characterised by its minimal ornamentation, including several structures that utilise exposed concrete, steel, and glass, creating a sleek and functional aesthetic. One of the foundation's notable features is the integration of historical elements, such as the restoration of traditional Sharjah houses into gallery spaces, combining modernist architecture with the region’s heritage. The minimalist design, with its emphasis on geometric forms and functional simplicity, enhances the presentation of contemporary art while respecting the architectural legacy of the area to great effect.
Designed by Victor Bisharat in 1964, the Koujak Jaber Building in Beirut features a flat facade punctuated by large, 3-metre diameter circular openings, earning it the nickname "Gruyère." These openings, alongside smaller elliptical cutouts, expose the building's structural elements and create a playful visual effect, transforming shapes based on the viewer's perspective. The structure prominently showcases large, smooth white exteriors and a large central dome flanked by two smaller domes, creating a balanced and symmetrical appearance. Another distinctive feature is the extensive use of glass, particularly in the large, arched windows that allow natural light to flood the prayer halls, which are free from unnecessary structural intrusions. Designed by Bulgarian architect Georgi Kolarov and completed in 1989, the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station celebrates simplicity, functionality, and clean lines. This is exemplified by its use of concrete and a neutral palette of whites and greys that highlight its minimalist design. Initially conceived with two U-shaped structures facing opposite directions, the station's design was further refined with the addition of an iconic roof. This roof, featuring four sweeping structures and half-rounded arches, not only provides shelter but also creates a dynamic, flowing visual effect. Inside, the focus remains on practicality and smooth passenger movement, adhering to the modernist ethos of efficient design. Completed in the late 1970s, Dubai’s Petroleum building features stark, geometric forms and a robust use of concrete. Meanwhile, its facade is marked by its rhythmic, vertical lines and angular geometry, which create a striking contrast against the city’s skyline. The building was created by architect Victor Hanna Bisharat, who opted for the use of large, uninterrupted surfaces and precise, clean edges reflecting modernist ideals of simplicity and efficiency. Inside, the space is organised to enhance utility and accessibility, aligning with the movement’s emphasis on practical solutions. The building’s silhouette, with its distinctive, angular profile, not only makes a bold visual statement but also integrates seamlessly into the urban fabric of Dubai, and as a classic example of modernist design, the Dubai Petroleum building continues to capture the architectural spirit of its time, blending form and function with a refined, enduring aesthetic.
