Rattan furniture has staged a stylish comeback in 2025. Wicker or rattan weaving is one of the oldest forms of furniture making, with roots in Ancient Egypt, where the stems of palm trees native to Africa and Asia were woven to make baskets and basic pieces of furniture. It became fashionable in high European society during the 19th century, when ornate rattan chairs and tables set the scene for many an upscale outdoor lounge, and had another moment in the 60s and 70s. Today, it is currently the subject of a refined revival and has, once more, become positively bougie, thanks to a collection of designers and brands that are taking this sustainable, fast-growing natural material and fashioning it into design-led, sculptural pieces that are being found in the most high-end homes.

For design fans, a summer trip to the South of France should include a visit to the atmospheric Atelier Vime boutique, which opens from mid-June until the end of August in the Provençal village of Vallabrègues, an area known historically for its wickerwork. Since it was established in the village 150 years ago, the company has worked to preserve and support the artisans and wicker culture of its location, and produces exquisite pieces of furniture, lights and accessories, from elegant daybeds and tables to sconces, lamps and tableware. It also stocks a range of unique vintage pieces.

With a heritage that stretches back over 135 years, the Italian company Bonacina is renowned for the craftsmanship and quality of its rattan furniture and lighting – so much so, Rizzoli published a book on it last autumn. Today, as in the 1880s when the company was established, each piece is made painstakingly by hand, although advances in synthetic materials have allowed it to diversify into enduring outdoor furniture, as well as natural rattan pieces. Design classics by the likes of Franco Albini and Joe Colombo remain in its collection, while recent collaborations have included pieces by designers such as Francis Sultana and Martina Mondadori.
When the UK’s last remaining rattan workshop was in danger of closing down in 2010 after 150 years of rattan weaving, Lulu Lytle, founder of the upscale furniture company Soane, stepped in to buy it. The workshop, with a workforce that has expanded from two artisans in 2011 to 18 today, makes all of Soane’s wide range of rattan products, which include the much-copied Venus scallop chair and trompe-l’oeil Ripple console table, along with a range of mirrors and lights.
The entrepreneur Mila Maurizi has weaving in her DNA; her father and grandfather were both master wicker weavers, and she has carried on her family’s history by producing a range of beautifully handcrafted pieces with a notably high-end aesthetic. Made in Mogliano, in the le Marche region of Italy, the collection includes sofas and chairs, as well as a wide range of storage jars and baskets. The pieces are available to buy via Artemest.
The designer Charles Orchard is based in Bali, Indonesia, where all of his rattan and bamboo furniture is made, and shipped all around the world. The collection includes contemporary pieces with a traditional twist, including sideboards, chairs and chests of drawers, but the point of difference here is the fun colourways. Glossy lacquers in a choice of shades such as cherry red, leafy green and sky blue give the pieces an aesthetic impact, yet the lightweight structures ensure the look remains elevated.
Founded in Amman, Jordan over 40 years ago, Rattan House started life as a small furniture-weaving workshop. Now based in Dubai, it combines a knowledge of traditional techniques with smart technology, producing elegant, modern pieces for outdoor spaces, and supplies hotel groups such as Marriott and Jumeirah, as well as private homes. It specialises in synthetic rattan that can be left on the terrace year-round, and fashioned into interesting weaves.
Launched last year in response to the growing demand for design-led rattan pieces, Rêve Rattan, based in Tamil Nadu, India, sells a collection of dining chairs, bar stools and lounge chairs, all hand-crafted. It is working with a team of designers, both established and emerging, to create pieces that are rooted in comfort and longevity, but have a contemporary edge – a symbol of the new ways in which rattan is being continually reinvented.
